Karmen Lai moved to New York City from Southern China in 2003. She completed dual bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Economic Finance at CUNY - College of Staten Island. After graduation, she began her professional career in wealth management. Today she still works for the same organization, now named as Fortis Lux Financial.
She is a resourceful and forward-thinking professional with extensive experience in providing ongoing support to senior executives and top-tier financial advisors.She prefers to take a creative approach when developing strategic solutions on a wide range of projects, in fast-paced environments. She enjoys identifying problem areas and performance gaps to mitigate or eliminate issues, while maintaining compliance with project management framework standards and procedures.
Another area where she has made a positive impact is in giving back to the community. She recruited firm members for a volunteer team that provides financial education to elementary school students. In 2019, she completed a collaboration project by launching a children's book - "A Penny Earned", to educate the younger generation about saving. In recognition of this, the firm received Crain’s Best Places to Work NYC from 2017 to 2021 and a 2017 Best Idea Nomination.
She believes that being able to work with multiple teams throughout her career has offered her amazing experiences. She is grateful for the opportunities she has been afforded to see huge projects come together- this has allowed her to exist in a consistent state of possibility.
What drives her is a profound desire to have a positive impact on those she leads and the world around her. She relishes intellectual challenges, “I find them captivating and stimulating, and I never want to stop learning - a new skill, anew trick, a new practice...” To enhance her knowledge and skills, she recently completed the Google Project Management Certificate, and the Digital Marketing Certificate designed by Columbia University. “As I continue my pursuit of growth and challenges, I am able to truly make the impact I believe is possible”.
Karmen is always interested in learning from her interactions with others. She is happy to connect with like-minded individuals!
She loves to explore and immerse herself in different cultures by traveling. For her traveling is not just about simply visiting a place, but about experiencing the topography, culture, and people of the destination.
